Tears of Steel (2012)

Project Mango was the Blender Foundation’s fourth movie. Production took place from March 2012 to October 2012 in the Blender Institute’s studio in Amsterdam. The targets were VFX compositing (green screens) and realistic renders with Cycles.

Seattle-based director Ian Hubert was invited to work in Amsterdam with an artist/developer crew on a sci-fi short film set in Amsterdam. Thanks to crowdfunding and support from the Netherlands Film Fund, a week of filming with a professional camera/light/sound crew was possible. The original footage was shot in a well-equipped green screen studio and on location in Amsterdam.

The Blender Institute team then worked four months on realizing the VFX for the film. Improvements were made to Blender’s motion tracker, camera solver, masking, Cycles, and color grading.

Additional funding by cinegrid.nl made it possible to re-render and deliver the whole film in 4k resolution. This version was released in April 2013.
Big Buck Bunny tells the story of a giant rabbit with a heart bigger than himself. When one sunny day three rodents rudely harass him, something snaps... and the rabbit ain't no bunny anymore! In the typical cartoon tradition he prepares the nasty rodents a comical revenge.
